Crewe & Nantwich Conservatives extend their warmest thanks to all who voted for Conservative Candidates last week (4th May 2023).
The Conservative Group presented 81 Candidates for the 82 Ward Places across the Cheshire East Borough and successfully had 33 Ward Councillors returned or elected to office. We received a greater voter share overall than in 2019 (even if this did not translate into additional ward wins).
We remain the largest group within the Council but without the key 42 ward member majority required, the Council remains in a state of ‘No overall control’.
Within our own constituency area, we are delighted to welcome Cllr Alison Heler (serving in Haslington with Cllr Steve Edgar) and Cllr James Pratt who has won the Crewe St Barnabas Ward.
Cllrs Janet Clowes (Wybunbury), Margaret Simon (Wistaston), Allen Gage (Willaston & Rope) and Steve Edgar (Haslington) were all successfully re-elected.
However it was with deep regret that Cllrs Andrew Martin and Peter Groves were narrowly defeated in Nantwich South. We would like to thank them for their years of committed service to the town they both love.
So too we would like to thank all our candidates who stood in wards across Crewe & Nantwich ensuring that the electorate had real alternatives to choose from in these important elections.
Regrettably, despite losing critical seats to Labour, the Independents have formed an ‘affiliated group’ and have chosen to form another Cheshire East Council coalition with the Labour Party; despite requesting from and being offered, a like for like arrangement with the Conservative Group.
This arrangement means that Cheshire East residents will remain subject to the Labour-Independent Budget service cuts identified in their 2023 MTFS (mid-term financial strategy) and further Council ‘tax to the max’ decisions.
The Cheshire East Conservative Group will continue to do all they can to hold the new administration to account and seek ways to mitigate the worst impacts of Labour-Independent decisions on our residents.
