As the 2022 New Year commences, Dr Kieran Mullan, MP for Crewe & Nantwich, offers an fascinating insight into the work he has carried out on behalf of constituents over the past twelve months. The on-going Covid Pandemic has not halted work; simply necessitated new ways of working to respond to residents’ needs.
“Happy New Year!
Always a time to reflect and despite all the difficulties and challenges I can't help but be incredibly grateful for all the amazing people I get to meet and work with across the constituency. So many people do so much for all of us! Building businesses, serving the public across a mix of public services, volunteering and working for charities!
Numbers wise this is what my team of staff helped me to deliver
- 8,000 responses to constituents e.g casework, policy questions
- 14 surgeries
- 300 virtual meetings
- 150 in person meetings.
I also spent time volunteering on the front line in the NHS which is of course where my passion for public service began! Key good news stories for all of Crewe & Nantwich this year include the £14 million Future High Streets and £22.9 million Town Deal awards, the opening of Crewe Market Hall, the success of the Barony perimeter fence campaign, Cheshire college being chosen as an Institute of Technology, HS2 being confirmed all the way to Manchester and Alstom winning a bid for building bogeys and the incredibly successful vaccine rollout thanks to local GP practices and pharmacies with help from Crewe Honda and Willaston Lodge.
Personally I was very pleased to have made a good start on our Crewe Alleyway Project, to have helped launch a local Kickstart Scheme that got dozens of young people into work placements, and to have held our first sessions of the school sport project pilot. Last but not least, I worked with other MPs to win government support for a new law for pet abduction and a new life sentence law for people that kill emergency service workers.
I have spoken 48 times in Parliament this year. I have pushed for funding for a new build at Leighton Hospital, asked government to develop geothermal energy for Cheshire, spoke up for businesses hit by lockdowns, backed reform of social care, supported Cheshire College in its bid to become an Institute of Technology and the Crewe Town Deal and spoke up on toughening sentencing for serious criminals.
It has been amazing to look back at all everything Crewe & Nantwich as a community is achieving and all I ever can do is amplify and support what others do so thank you so much to everyone who works hard in their businesses, public services , charities or volunteer groups to make Crewe & Nantwich the place it is,”
