Rural Lanes are usually full of character and throughout the year the scent of wild flowers, fresh rain, autumn leaves and frosty mornings are part of their charm. Unfortunately, Elton Lane in Winterley has over the past couple of years, been perfumed with - something less pleasant!
Haslington Cllrs Steve Edgar and Alison Heler were alerted to the odorous drain and localised surface water flooding by local residents, (special thanks to the members of the Weston Park Residents Association who have helped throughout!).
Since then, there have been multiple visits to the site by Cheshire East Highways, who recognised the drain needed attention, but that raw sewage was a matter for United Utilities. UU confirmed that raw sewage was the cause of the smells and was leaking into the surface water from an unknown source.
Finally, this week, after additional support from Dr Kieran Mullan MP, we managed to get the Environment Agency to visit Elton Lane and conduct investigations involving injections of dye into various potential sources of contamination.
Cllr Alison Heler stated;
“I’m delighted to say that the EA have finally got to the bottom of the problem and we are working with them to ensure that the leak is addressed. In the meantime, we have requested that CEC re-schedule jetting and gully clearance on Elton Lane in April.”
Here’s hoping that Elton Lane is smelling sweetly by Spring!
